In the News.........

Sunshine Corners has been busy with a Fall season full of fun activities and learning. The education of the children was recently enhanced by a visit from the Strasburg Fire Company truck and a few of its volunteers. On October 16th, representatives from the Strasburg Fire Co. visited the center to give the children opportunity to get on the fire truck, learn about fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, how to stop, drop and roll and the importance of fire safety
In addition to learning about fire safety this fall, the children at Sunshine Corners are busy learning about farms, pumpkins, apples, nursery rhymes and much more. This season provides the perfect opportunity for the teachers at Sunshine Corners to enhance the children’s education with such fun activities as tasting the difference between red, yellow and green apples, picking and painting pumpkins, making homemade butter and applesauce and exploring why the leaves change colors.
Sunshine Corners provides an important service to children and their parents in the Strasburg and surrounding communities by offering quality child care at affordable rates. The administration and teachers understand the importance of early learning for children and provide education through a variety of structured hands-on activities and play experiences in a nurturing environment. Children from ages two months to Prekindergarten age are welcome to attend Sunshine Corners, which is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Part-time and full-time schedules are welcome and rates are based on the age and schedule of the child

Two Sunshine Corners Associates
Awarded Child Care Credential

Barb Hall and Treva Kilby of Sunshine Corners Inc. have been awarded a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential in recognition of their outstanding work with young children. The credential was awarded by the Council of Professional Recognition in Washington, DC, which represents the early childhood education profession.

Parents who use early education and care are especially concerned today about their children’s welfare. With this in mind, as part of the CDA assessment process, every candidate for the CDA Credential is observed working with young children by an early childhood professional. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with families to develop children’s physical and intellectual capabilities in a safe and healthy learning environment.

In addition to the observations and work with parents, Barb and Treva both attended classes and seminars either at the Lancaster Campus of HACC or the Capital Area Training Institute. They were also required to assemble an extensive early childhood portfolio. The excellent quality care Barb and Treva have always provided to the children at Sunshine Corners has been enhanced by the education and experiences they received through the CDA Credential program.

The CDA Credential is having a positive effect on the quality of early childhood education and care. Its impact is evident in center-based and home visitor programs as well as family child care, the most common form of care for children under 5 years old.

Childcare staff and parents wanting information on CDA should write to the Council for Professional Recognition at 2460 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009-3575, or call the Council at (202) 265-9090 or (800) 424-4310.
